What to do with it

A store of your own is work I do. Tell me what you sell in a month and what it goes for, and I will tell you whether a small store would pay for itself, what bringing buyers to it would take, and whether to keep selling on Reverb beside it.

Every fee Reverb charges, and what it is charged on

Selling fee5%
On the item price and the shipping the buyer pays, not the tax. At least $0.50 and at most $500, which it reaches on a $10,000 sale; C$680, €500 and £500 in the other currencies. A full refund returns it, a partial refund returns its share.
Payment processing3.19% + 0.49
On the order total with the tax in, in the seller’s currency: US dollars, Canadian dollars or euros. Preferred Sellers pay 2.99%. A full refund returns it, a partial refund does not. Sellers in the UK pay none: their 5% is all in.
Cross-border1%
On the transaction total when the buyer and the seller are in different countries. Sales between countries of the European Economic Area are not cross-border, and the UK is outside it.
Currency conversion2.5%
On the payout after the fees, when the listing is priced in a currency you are not paid in.
Bump0.5% to 30%
A bid you set, charged only if the Bumped listing sells, on the item and the shipping without the tax.
Labelsthe label’s price
A label bought on Reverb comes out of your earnings. Safe Shipping is required on US items priced from $1,500 to $10,000.
Listingfree
Nothing to list an item, and nothing to take down one that did not sell.

Past five cancelled or refunded orders of your own in a month, the processing fee on the further ones is charged again. Reverb’s help centre prints C$680 as the Canadian maximum and its billing policy C$675; the calculator uses the help centre’s newer figure.

Reverb or eBay for a guitar, an amp or a pedal?

eBay charges one final value fee, with payment processing already inside it, on a total that includes the shipping and the tax. For Guitars & Basses it is 6.7 percent of the first $7,500 and 2.35 percent above, plus $0.40 an order. Amps and pedals have no category of their own, so they pay the 13.6 percent most categories pay.

On the worked example, a $650.00 guitar with $40.00 of shipping and 8 percent tax, eBay takes $50.33 against Reverb’s $58.76. Sell an amp for the same money and eBay takes $101.75. So the cheaper marketplace depends on the gear: eBay for a guitar or a bass, Reverb for most of the rest of the rig.

eBay adds 1.65 percent when a US seller ships abroad without eBay International Shipping, and 6 percent more on its fee for a seller rated below standard.

When a store of your own is worth it

The fees cross earlyOn the worked example your own store costs less than Reverb from the 2nd sale in a month: a $39.00 plan against Reverb’s $58.76 on every $690.00 sale. That is the easy half of the comparison.

Questions people ask

How much does Reverb take from a sale?

On a US sale, 5 percent of the item and the shipping, then 3.19 percent of the order total with the tax in plus 49 cents for payment processing. On the worked example that is $58.76 of the $690.00 the buyer pays for the guitar and the shipping, 8.5%.

Does Reverb charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The 5 percent selling fee is charged on the shipping the buyer pays, and payment processing on the whole order, shipping and tax included. A Bump is charged on the item and the shipping, without the tax.

Do I get Reverb’s fees back if I refund an order?

A full refund returns the selling fee, the processing fee and any Bump fee. A partial refund returns the selling fee in proportion and nothing else. Past five cancelled or refunded orders of your own in a month, the processing fee on the further ones is charged again.

Does a UK seller pay payment processing on Reverb?

No. Reverb says sellers in the UK pay an all-in 5 percent once the gear sells, with no payment processing fee. A sale to a buyer outside the UK adds the 1 percent cross-border fee.

Is Reverb cheaper than eBay?

It depends on what you sell. For a guitar or a bass in the US, eBay’s all-in 6.7 percent comes to less than Reverb’s two fees at any price up to $7,500. For amps, pedals and most other gear, eBay charges 13.6 percent, and Reverb is the cheaper of the two.

What is a Reverb Bump and what does it cost?

Reverb’s paid promotion for a listing. You set a bid from 0.5 to 30 percent, and it is charged only if the Bumped listing sells, on the item and the shipping without the tax.

Does anything I type leave this page?

No, while the page’s script is running: the sums run in your browser. The link you copy carries the fields, so whoever opens it sees the same result. With JavaScript turned off the page still works, and then the fields travel to my server in the address, the same way a copied link does.
